Isn't it funny how much adult stuff is in this movie yet the film was made by disney with paramount. They made popeye also. What's more funny is in the uk this is released as a kids movie by disney! The dvd is under the disney name.
Is this disney's most adult film under the disney name or is "poc" series the most dark? What do you guys think?
Disney owns Touchstone, Hollywood, and Miramax. And I know at least one of those companies owns an adult film studio because its pretty much a license to print money.
But back to your actual question... I would guess its a toss up between this and Pirates. PoC is pretty violent in parts, but so is DS. But DS has the basically full frontal lake scene. I would say DS wins.
I agree, Womble. The Black Hole (1979) was also quite terrifying for a Disney movie. The film touched on a dark relationship between genius and insanity and although it was produced with a younger target audience in mind, it's not a movie I would recommend for kids under the age of 10. Anthony Perkin's death scene, although gore-free, was extremely confronting as well. Other "non-family oriented" Disney movies are Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) and, surprisingly, Steven Lisberger's Tron (1982)...the latter containing an early CG torture scene.
Disney can be quite dark and morbid when it wants to be that's for sure. One wonders how Walt would react to today's Disney film fare were he still alive.
"I KNOW, RIGHT!? Ahhaha...WOO!" <- This terrible writing is why Green Lantern failed.
I'd say Dragonslayer is easily the darkest and the most violent Disney movie. You even have a scene, in which baby dragon is shown munching the ripped off foot of the princess and the whole atmosphere is pretty grim all in all.
The Black Hole has its moments of darkness, but it is as a whole more goofy whit the robots. And the ending is just phsychedelic.
When I saw this movie in the theater, I have no recollection that this was a Disney production. I remember all the reviews that it was a better story than "Excalibur" that had come out earlier.
If you look at movieposterdb dot com, they don't show Disney.
