NEVER knew about this movie until now.

I'm nearly 46 years old (which I'll deny in any other topics), but I didn't know that this movie even existed until today. That's not so strange when you realize how many movies have been made since the invention of movie-making, but that's just bizarre for a DISNEY movie. The only other disney movies that disney has kept locked up in the basement the way it has with this one is "Song of the South" & "Watcher in the woods".

Touchstone is a red hair herring. "Splash", which touchstone helped make, was hyped out the WAZOO by disney, so it's hard to claim that touchstone's movies are shunned by disney the way that this movie is. Also, other disney movies are approximately as 'adult' as this one, but they're usually not thought of as being adult-ish movies because most of them are animated. The following is a necessarily brief list of examples.
Black hole
Fox & the hound
Malifecent
Song of the south (not adult-ish, but definitely shunned)
Watcher in the woods

It was a hard sell when it came out. I saw it with a friend, and we both loved it, but I don't recall it being a real big hit.

Summer movies usually aren't dark and brooding like Dragonslayer. Most people are expecting something a bit more light-hearted, and Dragonslayer was not that at all, but cynical as well as being visually dark, in spite of having a happy ending.

It's one of my top ten films of all time.
