Should the movie have shown the Kraken at the beginning?

Personally I don't think so. Don't get me wrong. I like the movie, but I think it should have held off on a full reveal until the end. Maybe a shot or two suggesting it would have worked better with a full reveal of its head and body saved for the end so we can have a bit more of a shock factor at what Perseus is facing. Does anyone agree?

Arguable. I think the only reason we've "seen it all" is because all monsters look the same these days. Seriously, where's H.R. Giger when you need him?

But it wasn't fully revealed at the beginning. You saw his underside as it swam out of it's lair, then you saw it's back and part of it's tail as it dived, causing the wave. It was only fully revealed at the end during the sacrifice.

reply

Its head was clearly visible, as was its upper torso. That for me lessened the impact when it rose out of the sea to attack Andromeda at the movie's climax.

Requiescat in pace, Krystle Papile. I'll always miss you.

In a very split second. They didn't show enough of it to ruin it later. But I guess that's just me.

reply

As a kid I don't remember it being in the beginning, but watching it now I fully agree. Plus, the sunset lighting at the end suited creature's design better. The broad daylight in the beginning made the Kraken look cheap.

Harryhausen's creations were the stars of the movie.

Straightedge means I'm better than you.

If one looks at any Ray Harryhausen movie from 7th VOYAGE onwards, he always wanted to show his monsters in full glory right from the beginning (think of the Cyclops in 7th VOYAGE).

It is ironic that in his b/w films, he used a more subtle approach. We would not see The Beast, the giant octopus or the Ymir in full scale until later in those films.

reply

Remember, in his later films he would be juggling many creatures, not just one. Ray simply didn't have the time and budget to do slow reveals for every one of his creations.

I agree.

Maybe, instead of seeing the Kraken, we see a shadow covering Argos just before it proceeds to wreck sh8t.

In spite of this, and despite the special effects that were even a bit behind the times in 1981, this movie is still a classic. Also, it's more enjoyable than the 2010 remake.
