Das Boot (1981) or Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)?

I say Raiders, but just barely.

Two completely different movies that you cannot in any reasonable way shape or form compare. They're apples and oranges.

You might as well be comparing Lord of the Rings with..... Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

They're both from 1981, and probably are widely considered the best 2 movies from that year. They are the two highest rated 1981 films on IMDb. Raiders is #30 on the IMDb Top 250. Das Boot is #68.

Being made in the same year means nothing. They're still two complete different apples and oranges films.

The only other common ground these two movies share is that they both used the same submarine model. Other than that, and being released the same year, I see no use in comparing the two. However, if I HAD to choose, well, that's a tough one. I love them both for different reasons.

I could not even pick one over the other. I like both movies so equally much, that i chose to purchase them both on Blu-ray when they got released.

Both movies are masterpieces. Of course, Das Boot is the more serious drama/war movie, and Raiders is just a fun popcorn movie. But both are fantastic.

I'm just on my way up to Clavius.

The submarine in Raiders is the exact same one they used in Das Boot. Trivia, for whoever is interested.
