Ending at La rochelle (spoilers)

The sub pens were almost bombproof. Why would the sub stop
outside? I believe the RAF patrolled the approaches to La Rochelle and St. Nazaire; I would think a returning sub would get inside the pen ASAP.

I know the allies bombed sub pens in France and Germany, but I think the only
somewhat successful raids were by heavy bombers, sometimes with "block-buster"
bombs.

In the movie, the "bombers" looked like low-flying single engine planes. Does the book explain any of this?

It won't chip, peel, blister, crack, flake or rust in any way.

The single-engined planes in the film are AT-6 trainers, the only plane that then - and even more today - could be acquired to create an illusion of WW2. For many year it has been the plane in a WW2 film (today, with fast and powerful computers, it would be no problem to create a thousand-bomber raid over Cologne, of course, or to raze Hamburg to the ground once more).
The shot with the bombers splitting up, is a shot from the 1969-film 'Battle of Britain', where a formation of He-111 breaks up, not to attack London, but to run away attacked by 'those last fifty Spitfires and Huricanes'
