I guess I'm the only Boogens fan since I'm the only one posting topics here, can't imagine why, with its stunning SFX and award worthy script? :) Anyway don't ask me to explain why I like this movie, I just do, so does anyone know if there is a DVD release in the works? I'd love it if it has some cut scenes and commentary from Balding, McCarren and director Conway.

I've got to believe that if useless crud like "Return of the Boogeyman", "Neon Maniacs" and "The Alien Factor" can get DVD releases then this one certainly will. Hopefully what's delaying it is they're rounding up bonus material like the theatrical trailer, outtakes and commentary from cast and crew, which would make its release all that much sweeter!

Who does own it? Ownership/rights with this movie always seems to be a sticky issue, it took over 10 years just to make it from the theater to VHS! If anyone can point me in the right direction I'll try to make some inquiries, and I'll post the results if I find anything out.

I've done a little poking around it seems like your right and its owned by Republic Entertainment Inc, which in turn is owned by Artisan Entertainment. I went to their site to see if there was someone I could email but it seems like half their site has errors, and I couldn't find any contact info. If I dig anything new up I'll let you all know.

I know the person who directed this movie and he told me about a year ago that a DVD release was not going to be in the works for a while, as well as some other films that he has made and that also includes Silent Night, Deadly Night.
You must be thinking of the producer, because best as I can tell director James Conway has no connection to "Silent Night, Deadly Night", which by the way has made it out on DVD. Did he happen to say what the hold up is?

Yes I am sorry, I know Chuck Sellier and I had talked to him about the Boogens and he said that there was not going to be a DVD of it for a while, but he had done a commentery for a DVD release of Silent Night, Deadly Night. Sadly he has recently moved and I have not talked to him since this past April.
Hi AndyBob...I liked it too...I remember when it came out in theaters when I was younger...always wanted to go see it, but never did. Caught it on HBO a year or so later, and loved it. Thought it was pretty decent, and despite it's flaws, certainly much better than a lot of the drek that became readily available on video throughout the years... Not sure what the deal was, I know that it didn't see a video release for almost 20 years, hopefully it won't be that long before it's made available on dvd.
I remember when the commercials came out for it and wanted to see it too, but I was way too young back then. Then of course the video rights went off to La La Land or something and I had to finally chase down a crappy bootleg to actually see it, its a shame that it got so bottled up while other movies that are total garbage have been in print for years. Yeah its rittled with plot holes, a weak script and bad monster effects in the climax, but still I'm rather fond of it for reasons I can't put my finger on, like why I like another 80's cheapee called "The Boogeyman". I found the book it was based on (yes there is a "The Boogens" book!) and was surprised at how good a read it was, its quite different from the movie is very creepy. In it the monsters are more like slimey, killer starfish than the blood thirsty turtles of the film, the only disappointment was the end which was like the writers decided to rip everything to shreds, after such a good build up it really tick'd me off.

I am yet another avid "Boogens" fan. This obscure little horror gem was the first 'R'-rated movie I ever saw in a theater. I was in 4th grade and my dad took me and my cousin to see it on a gray, snowy day (just like in the movie). I have remained a loyal fan over the 22 years since, despite the aforementioned slight flaws with the film. It's basically a simple little story that's totally effective. The isolated setting, moody atmosphere, and chilling score add up to a pretty frightening experience. "The Boogens" also boasts some great point-of-view cinematography as well as what I would call the best ever animal performance in a movie by the poodle (a nice touch). When I lived in Los Angeles a few years ago, I met someone who worked with Jeff Harlan, who played "Roger", and who is now mostly doing commercial work. Of course, I instructed this guy to give Jeff my best on "The Boogens". I am desperate for a dvd release, but it doesn't sound too promising, huh? As you all already know, it was originally produced by Taft International Pictures and released by Jensen Farley Pictures. 15 years later, it was bought by Republic Pictures, which I think is owned by Aaron Spelling's parent company. What's even more depressing is the fact that the Republic video version makes me suspect that the movie's original source elements have not been preserved very well over the years. This video is really choppy and the sound isn't great. The negatives apparently aren't in good shape. Who knows? Hopefully, I'm wrong and it will get a full out special edition dvd release! I would be ecstatic!
I saw this film in the theater when it was released :-/ Yeah, I'm a fan. But, other than the plot, all I remember is the scene when a Boogen pulls a little dog through a floor heating vent. I'm an avid Monster-Movie fan. In my opinion, Humanoids From the Deep was a far better film and just as cheezy.
I caught a recent showing of The Boogens on IFC, and the logo that came up before the start of the movie was actually Paramount! It was also a new widescreen transfer of the film, so I can only assume that Paramount has somehow picked up the rights to this one. I bet a widescreen DVD is in the offing soon...
Are you serious? That is great news. I too remember this film getting released. The commercials made a lasting impression on me. I remember the girl getting chased through the house as seen through the eyes of the pursuing boogen, with a door getting slammed in the face and it's claw visible chipping at the door. I also remember a guy working under his truck and getting pulled underneath it by a boogen! It terrified me! Of course, I was too young to see such things, and have never gotten the chance to view the film. I still want to see it very much.
I hope the hell so, you know this movie is hardly a work of genious and it makes plenty of mistakes, but still between Conway's creepy direction and Rebecca Balding's big-eye'd cute charisma this film is far more worthy of a full DVD release than most of the big budget, high tech trash that passes for entertainment these days. As a rule personally there are very few films that on which I'd spend more than $15 US dollars, but this one would qualify for that extremely rare $15 to $30 range for which I'd spring for, and if I'm any gage whomever releases it on DVD will be pleasently surprised at how many people who will go out of their way to buy it. Come'on Paramount, if a worthless piece of crap like "Alien Dead" and "Return of the Boogeyman" can get a special widescreen, extra-packed release then this one is certainly worth it!
The interesting thing about this movie along with a bunch of others from the early to mid-eighties is the cold hard fact that these kind of horror movies were considered a joke to real horror buffs, but if you compare it to the garbage they put out today it might as well be a classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If Paramount truly does own the rights, then that is excellent news for any "Boogens" fan! Paramount seems to release most of their library titles on DVD eventually...horror or otherwise. The potentially bad news is that if they do indeed release "The Boogens" on DVD, I highly doubt that it will have any extras at all...maybe the theatrical trailer if anything. Paramount totally sucks with regards to the extras for their library titles. They rarely include any. As always, the best scenario would be for Anchor Bay to acquire "The Boogens" and give us a comprehensive DVD package. I'll keep dreaming............
O I saw this movie in the theatre and it scared me to death. I was in 8th grade and a friend & I had her dad buy the tickets and drop us off. It was great! Would love to own it. Let's make it Happen people!
You're not alone :) I've been looking everywhere for this movie lol We deffinatly need a dvd release...hell even from HK lol If I find it anywhere I'll post my info here :)
