The door is rigged (isn't it?) to go off when Hurt opens it, so how did she do that from far enough away to avoid the blast?

She had a delay on it (probably 30 sec. ). Mickey Roarkes character told this to Ned.She swam away after the boat house blew up .When Ned get's her year book it say's she was a good "swimmer".

Here is the dialogue from the scene that perplexed you. I assume you were watching the movie on a DVD. If so, you can select the sub-titles option at the main menu or from the remote control to view the text. There are a lot of great movies where the actors mumble their lines. That is why I always turn on the subtitles feature.
Stella(Waitress):
Did you hear about Dr. Block?
Ned:No. Do I want to?
Stella(Waitress):
Agnes Marshall
Ned:
Must have been Mrs. Block's idea of punishment.
Stella(Waitress):
