You're right. This story is extremely influenced by the style of James M. Cain. It succeeds in a very clever fashion in updating and devising its own original story twists and turns. I wasn't convinced though of the way Kathleen Turner convinced Hurt that she truly loved him (before the murder). The only thing I saw was her nymphomaniac control over both Hurt and her husband. But to me she was unconvincing as pulling off her act of truly being in desperate love with Ned. I think she overplayed her role. Other than that everything fit together for your suspension of disbelief. The ending was well thought out and the movie was cohesive, even when as convoluted as the stories of James M. Cain. Incidentally, the movie of Double Indemnity ended entirely different from that of the book. Two very different tales.
