'no thanks, I 'll just breathe the air'

When the one lawyer asked if anyone minded if he smoked, and everyone except Ted Danson lit up a cigarette, I thought it was brilliant typical Danson-type cynicism when he gave that response.

It's a pretty accurate inside joke amongst non-smokers from back in the day before the country all of a sudden declared war on smokers and smoking.

Yeah i literately busted out loud laughing and the other people watching with me didn't and looked at me funny and i just shook my head.

Seems wit is hard to come by these days.

CLASSIC line.

reply

I agree... This scene + line are legendary.

reply

I can't imagine that line is at all original.

reply

Original or not, it's hilarious, and Ted Danson delivers it with aplomb.

reply

It's not the originality, it's that a director chose to put the line in a movie in 1981 -- at a time when six people sitting around a conference table smoking was perfectly normal and socially acceptable.

The huge anti-smoking campaign in the US was still more than 10 years away at that point.

reply

He is not really religiously non smoker, he dosn't really mind, he is much more interested in the situation and doesnt care if they smoke. Line is like joke about people who would mind even though he appears that way himself, thats the genious of it.

He is offered cigarette at the pier so sometimes he smokes himself too.

reply

But didn't he throw away the one he was offered at the pier?

reply

Yeah but he wouldnt get offered if he never smoked.

Perhaps a wee bit of credit for the brilliant cynicism is due to the person who actually wrote the line, as opposed to the person who read, memorized and recited the line?
