why would matty have told ned were she went to high school?

if she was trying to hide her true identity i found that bit stupid, for all her intelligence she goes now and leaves evidence to the cops she is still alive.

reply

It's a plot device used so Ned could track her down and have the twist ending. It wouldn't make sense in the real world.

reply

She didn't tell him she went to high school she said "after I left Wheaton". Ned took it from there.

reply

yea that is telling him, she should have been smart enough to reveal nothing of her true identity.

reply

Unless she wanted the cops to crash the tropical party.

reply

I have thought about that too, and know it was so they would have the twist ending. Matty probably didn't think Ned would figure it out, or be able to research. Even mentioning Wheaton, so many things could have gone wrong. There could have been many Wheatons in the US, Matty could have gone to a Catholic or private high school, or simply dropped out. For a woman who whenever she spoke she was lying, she messed up and told the truth about something crucial. Of course she was out of the Country before Ned got the revelation.

reply

At the time she dropped that she was busy lying to him about stealing his papers from his office. Ned took a shot at Wheaton and it paid off.

You see, if she didn't tell him that, it would have been more difficult for the writer to come up with a way for him to find out.

reply

She was able to work Ned like a puppet but I think she may have slightly underestimated him.... She was after all looking for an incompetent lawyer..

reply

Indeed, and one that was going to get blown up anyway.

When I'm gone I would like something to be named after me. A psychiatric disorder, for example.

reply

I think she was rubbing his face in it, knowing that he would eventually figure it out and not be able to do anything about it. She left behind no proof, no evidence, nothing that can be tied to her.

reply

''She left behind no proof, no evidence, nothing that can be tied to her.''

except a photo of her true identity with her name beside it...

reply

It's just a minor concession to convenience, in my opinion

Oscar told him they'd gotten dental records for Matty (the real Matty) from Illinois. He could also have tracked down her actual high school as a favor for Ned.

Based on that, with all that time at his disposal, Ned could've tracked down that yearbook anyway

Having her drop the Wheaton name just makes it easier for the audience. So if it was a contrivance, it was a harmless one.

Besides, it could've been a believable mistake if, as Kathleen Turner has claimed, her character really did fall love with Ned. She seems the type who'd be good at mixing truth with lies for a more convincing presentation.

reply

Actually, when she said it, she had planned to get him killed, so she probably didn't think that she was leaving loose ends.

reply

It's been a while but I thought someone else told Ned about her past?

reply

Killers do tease, just to see if they can be caught. And the thing about mixing some truth with lies is very valid too. Sociopaths and narcissistic personality disorders do this regularly, it helps them get away with the actual lies.
