Why didn't Ned.....(spoilers)

When Ned gets the call from the law firm handling Walker's will, the natural reaction would've been to deny ever handling the will. 'What will? I never met Edmund Walker.' Instead, he just folds himself into more trouble. After asking some questions of the attorney, I'm thinking Ned could've said something like he once met Matty Walker at a party, and she was coming on to him pretty heavy--finding out where his office was, then he never saw her again. Remember, he and Matty were very careful about not being seen together.
So I say to Ned--just deny everything. (yes-I know it would've been a different movie).
It looks like he had a ready answer to Lowenstein's wondering where Ned was on the night of the local murder. What dya think it was?

That's a legitimate question, but you must understand that Neds lack of good judgement was a necessary plot device. Think about it. If Ned Racine was an intelligent, on the up and up kinda guy, there wouldn't be much of a story to tell. His character (or lack of) is made very clear. Maddie was aware of this. She was in fact counting on it....

I thought of that too. But if he would have been honest (about the will) and claimed that he had never heard of it, then it would have led to even more questions and made it even more likely that he would have gotten caught.

At that point in the movie, he was trying to reach Maddy and couldn't. That call through him for a loop so I would guess he played along because of his draw and keep involvement with Maddy at this point.
