The Music, Oh God, The Music

I love Barry's music in this. "I'm Weak" is my favorite piece, mesmorizing and sexy.

"We would have come earlier, but your husband wasn't dead then."

I recently bought the blu-ray disc just so I could get the terrific soundtrack.
Fortunately, I love the movie, but the music is some of Barry's best, and THAT is saying something. Love John Barry.

Barry's the best, isn't he? This film has an excellent, jazzy score. Lots of films released in the early '80s have that heavy synth soundtrack – which I like, but which is very dated now – but this score still sounds contemporary because jazz is timeless.

reply

So true. Too many 80's films use that synth stuff and it makes the films seem so dated. This score only makes the film timeless the way good noirs should be.

A little late to this conversation, but...

When the movie started, about 10 seconds into it, I thought I LOVE THIS MUSIC! I went out the next day to the record store (remember when there were record stores?) and looked for the soundtrack. Nothing. Keep checking every week or so. I was so disappointed. EVERY damn movie has a soundtrack. Das Boot had a soundtrack.

Flash forward to maybe 1995. I went online to buy the DVD of the movie (I had two VHS copies, just in case) and when I searched, I found a soundtrack and immediately bought it. I have a copy in my car at all times.

The liner notes said that BH was somewhat of a cult film, and for years, people were complaining (I don't know to who) that there was no soundtrack, so someone did one.

If you have seen Dances With Wolves, then you know how amazing this mans music can be to a film! Haunting and uplifting and memorable!

reply

I was posting over at Double Indemnity how listening to the theme from that movie made me think of this one and long to hear it.

John Barry was a great composer. His music will stand the test of time IMO.

reply

Just out of curiosity, which films do you think have better scores? Neo noir films or Film noir movies?

reply

John Barry's sensual, smooth jazz score for this film is indeed remarkable. He's one of the all-time great composers of film.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

I can only second what has been said here, a truly great score.
All through my twenties this score was an obseesion to get on some kind off format
I still have the silver screen numbered edition which was the so-called 'illegal'
release because of copyright infringement. I have the vinyl too, bought both of them at hefty prices on ebay.

A couple of years it was finally and splendidly released on cd coinciding with its 30th anniversary.

Respect to John Barry!!

As I was watching the film, I kept feeling this wonderful soundtrack. I liked the film a lot but the soundtrack was the best part.

I personally loved the scene where Teddy (Mickey Rourke) is listening to "Feel like a number" by Bob Seger and lip syncing along for a few lines before advising Ned about the intelligence of what he is planning to do. One of my favorite moments in the movie.

"You met me at a very strange time in my life"

Late to this thread , but have been loving this score since the first time I saw the movie in the cold winter if 1981.

I downloaded it a few years ago and have it on my iPhone ever since!
