***SPOILERS***
The clown in a way is a mirror image of Ned. We see Ned getting out of his car and into a red convertible at that moment of the movie, just as a clown drives by driving a similar red convertible. The scene is an omen to Ned and foreshadowing to us, he's playing the clown and being manipulated by Mattie.
Interesting. Thank you for the response.

Body Heat = lots of sweat! lol!!
It strikes me that there was an episode of Cheers in which the gang debates the sweatiest movies of all time. They may even mention Body Heat -- I only recall Rocky II and Cool Hand Luke among the nominees -- but it's interesting that Ted Danson participates in the discussion when he himself stars in a potential candidate.
shareWhen someone in Cheers mentions Body Heat, the camera stops on Sam (Danson). I always liked that!
"Takin' a lo-o-ong drink of Miss Matty, Boss."
"Takin' a long drink of Miss Matty, Luke."
"Indulge me...while I revel in my time"
Yes, the clown was a warning to him that he's being made a clown by her. And there was other foreshadowing- when he leaves the jail from visiting a client and the door SLAMS shut and he jumps from how loud it is. It was very well done.
shareThis one was OK, but the clown, as foreshadowing goes - a little absurd. Foreshadowing is subtle by definition. In a film this serious, making a point of showing a clown in full makeup casually passing by and offering no context for it (just an "oh by the way Ned, there's a circus in town" or even a "Breakers...that's over by the fairgrounds right?" would have been enough) - it draws too much attention to itself.
shareIt wasn't foreshadowing per se, it was an omen for Ned.
"For once in my life, I'd like to catch somebody BEFORE they do something horrible. Alright?"
The clown was a portent of doom for Ned. It was an odd image a sad clown driving a convertible down a street and being out of place signaled impending danger. It worked better than say if Kasdan had used a black crow or storm clouds as the omen. It also seemed like something out of a David Lynch movie.
shareNow if the Clown had a babe sitting next to him in the car that looked a lot like Mattie Walker, THAT would have been a helluva foreshadow.
sharethe clown could mean a few things 1. A symbol to Ned, that he's being a clown by following Matty. 2. The clown is meant to represent that Ned is playing the fool. 3. A circus is in town. 4.The clown is meant to show Ned that not all is what it seems.
