Season 4: Peter DeVilibis - What the F were they thinking?

That dude is ugly and can't act his way out of a paper bag. This feels like he beginning of the European-ization of Dynasty, and that's not a good thing. Just because it's European doesn't mean it works for the show, and I'm looking at you, Amanda and Fallon II.

LOL. Reportedly, Pamela Sue was not happy having Helmut Berger as her love interest. She has publicly stated that the same season the show gave Joan Collins a love interest in Michael Nader (whom Pamela thought was hunky), while she "got stuck" with Berger.

Also, reportedly, Peter was written out hastily. He was supposed to last longer. And in the end, they created the role of Peter's assistant/lawyer, Maurier (played by Jon Cypher) to give him some of the lines Peter was supposed to deliver, as Berger was god awful in the role.

Oh my God yes - Berger sucked.

It was terrible. Eurotrash.

Apparently the "actor" in real life laughed that all he had to do was say a few lines and they would pay him buckets of money. It was also said that he was often ill prepared with his lines.

I don't recall where I read that, though.

reply

He was awful. Had the role been played by an actor who was actually charming and who actually worked to give a decent performance, I might have felt differently. As it was, I couldn't understand what Fallon saw in him and I can't begrudge Pamela Sue Martin for her opinion. I would have preferred Michael Nader over Helmut Berger any day!

The hasty exit of Peter DeVilibis may also account for the rather rushed reunion of Fallon and Jeff, but I loved seeing them together as a couple one last time before Pamela Sue Martin left the show.

reply

I agree - another actor could have made a difference, at least someone who would put better effort.

I also appreciate the brief reunion and I came to like Fallon/Jeff in Season 4. The show had slowly planted the seeds for them, even in Season 3. She always wanted someone "exciting" like her father but after de Vilbis, perhaps she had a realization.

reply

He was also substance-addled and, according to Gordon Thomson, "very stupid."

Maybe the producers were going by photos of Berger from the '60s or early-'70s.

Unfortunately, what they were thinking was that they desperately needed a storyline for Fallon in season 4; after Nick Toscani left after season 2 and she and Krystle called a truce in season 3, there seemed to be little for her to do. The only young men on the show were her brothers or her ex-husband.

reply

As other posters here have noted, Helmut Berger was awful in the role and ill-prepared with his lines. Joan Collins wrote in one of her books that he liked to party into the night, which is why he didn't study his lines. Collins warned him that he'd be fired, but he didn't take her seriously. At first the producers gave his lines to his "assistant" on the show, and then he was quickly terminated.

They should have brought back Count Pierre du Chalon (France Benard) from the La Mirage grand opening party from Season 3.

Anyone but Berger.
