1984

Does anybody know why there was apparently no series filmed in 1984?

Every other year from '81 to '90, a series was filmed, but there was a gap between Series 3 (filmed, apparently in 1983) and Series 4 (apparently filmed in 1985).

In the meantime there were significant changes - Louise Jameson appeared, Charlotte was replaced by Peggy, the Bureau moved to Haute de la Garenne, and the Royal Barge was replaced by Lil's Place. Quite a change of feel.

Sorry for replying 7 years too late but I notice you are still a regular on here...not 100% sure but I gather Michael Grade didn't like the show and probably was hesitant about recommissioning. He did this with Lovejoy, hence the five year gap between series 1 and 2!

It's never too late to fill in the gaps!

Thanks for the insight; I didn't know Michael Grade didn't like the show - makes me question his judgement :-)

When it comes down to it, it's the politics that spoil most jobs, and program makers/actors are very vulnerable in that regard.

Apparently he cancelled a fair amount of shows though I don't have any examples.

It's like you say, all down to the internal politics - at least John Nettles had the last laugh in the end and quit the show himself, taking it out of the hands of the "politicians".

I do remember as well that "Jersey" was not overly happy with Bergerac at some point.... Not sure if this also was part of the explanation.

I use the quotes as I assume it was their parliament or whoever, a faction of whom were upset that it portrayed Jersey as a hotbed of crime lol!

Not sure when & where but this may have had a bearing.

I know it was brought up again when Nettles applied for residency. Although it was granted, there were some dissenting voices on similar grounds. Luckily others recognised he helped boost the appeal of the island.
