Toby the dog was way cool

Cinemajunkie
I think that dog was beyond cool. Toby really played an intricate part in character developement/ plot of the movie.

"I said a philps screw driver, Toby ".

The sceen where Toby whizzed on the mecahnic

The Sceen where Toby palyed dead, so Jeff could sell the car"

The Sceen where Toby tried to attacked Royal Fuches leg

My all time favorite, is the Sceen where Jeff is jumping the train, with the red car ( in order to save the car lot) they show Toby in the back set, covering his head with his Paws.
That sceen works beautifuly with the Shot of Jeff (sitting in the drivers seat) crossing his eye's and holding his Rosary Beads in his mouth, just as the car jumps the train ! It is totaly hysterical but yet builds tension in a fun way, WHAT A BRILIANT SCEEN

The character's of Jeff the superstious car salesmen and Toby the Dog, really played off of each other.

What a talented stunt Dog

His real name was Peanut, listed in the closing credits.

Does anybody know anymore about him or her ?????

I liked the scene where Jeff was on the walkie talkie talking to Kurt Russell, right before the students were gonna drive all the cars to the lot. As he's talking, Toby steps on his balls, and Jeff says "Will you watch where your stepping..."

Great dog.

Another cool thing about that sceen was Jeff stepped out of the red car, all freaked out. Almost got ran over by a car, then sat on the curve.
Kurt Russel was desperately trying to get ahold of Jeff, but the walkie talkie was in still in the car (way before the days of cell phones).
Toby Brings the walkie talkie, out ot Jeff who is sitting beside the raod.
Then Kurt Russel convinces, Jeff it's really a grey car.
So Jeff, jumps the train.

What a brilant dog, he is always doing cool things through out this movie to save the day. Including showing the gang, that the car buried in the pit, has been discoverd.

What a cool dog, who is on top oif stuff !!!!

I wonder if Tobby did any other films ?

Did you know that Tobby was listed as Peanut in the credits.

reply

When that dog was holding the walkie talkie, and it said "Are you there", it looked like the dog was talking, lol.

For those wanting Toby trivia...

There were actually two dogs used on the set. Toby or Peanut was not the dog that was in Jeff's arms when they shot the "station wagon" bit. Toby had a stunt dog.

Peanut, during filming bit Jeff's (Gerrit Graham) hand, puncuturing the skin and drawing blood. The evidence is still there, in the form of a scar on his hand.

I love that little doggie! He was so cute! When I retire I think I'll buy a Beagle and name him Toby-Peanuts. His scenes were all classics in the film. I never even noticed the one of him watching the television! Great pooch!

Peanut (Toby) sure was great.

Although I know the dog wasn't dead,(the first time I saw the movie, I thought he was dead at first, I forgot about the setup) That performance by Jeff made me cry!! Call me a crybaby, but I love animals and hate to see them hurt.

Toby was a lovable little dog. :)

Toby is awesome! He must be really smart if they could train him to fetch the tools and phone. How did they do that? Also, if the dog's actual name was Peanut, wouldn't it get confused if they called him by another name?

Did y'all notice in the scene where the "Demolition Derby: guy shows up to trash the '57 Chevy, as we walking around the office looking for a salesman he looks in and Toby is sitting on the desk staring intently at the TV? His favorite show must've been on. LOL

Movie animals are never listening or reacting to the other actors. They only respond to their trainer, who is just off camera. He or she uses hand signals or ultrasonic (dog) whistle to direct the animal, most of the time. You should read up on Rudd Weatherwax (Lassie).

Yes he was a cool dog in this movie!

Dogs like Toby and Eddie from Frasier are awesome. Wish there were more. The funniest thing was Toby pissing in Jim's face to wake him. Toby knew it was important enough to resort to that because he was in on the plan. Smart dog! haha
