More typically it's anwer number two on the yahoo question thingy. Charon was the ferryman on the river Styx, a river in Hades for souls being transported from the world of the living to that of the dead. Without payment, the souls would be left to wander the earth or limbo depending on which version is being told.

Jeff, being very superstitious, would probably believe all of it.
