When Kurt picked up the "dead" Toby the dog, that dog was knocked out, tongue dangling, good night. While I'm sure it does no harm to the animal, I'm surprised the Humane Association allowed that, but it was a different time then. I'm pretty sure it's not done nowadays, at least I can't think of an instance I've seen on screen in the last 25 years at least.

Peanuts was a highly trained animal actor and pulled off some amazing scenes . Opening one eye while playing dead ". Getting a screw driver for Jack Warden and putting it back in the tool box . That dog was special and I have no doubt it was talent and commands that got him to play dead not drugs.
shareFunny you mention the Humane Association. In the commentary version of this, Zemeckis and Gale mentioned during the scene with the father and his kids they brought in a Humane Society worker to help keep the film animal rights friendly.

In order for a film to get the "no animals were harmed..." bit in the credits, and often distribution period, they have to have a Humane Association, or similar organization nowadays, rep present when animals are being used. shareJust saw this film, and the dog is clearly drugged when actor picks it up after the shtick of running it over. A dog cant be taught to be that relaxed so its tongue lols around, and be so limp, it is against its nature. He is alert when he does the blink though, as it is a different take.
I have had a beagle like the breed in the movie, and they are fun and will do a lot for food, but in 30 years of owning dogs, i have never experienced a dog ever have a lolling tongue, unless in full sedation at the vet.
