Manic Street Preachers

Anyone else out there seek out and watch Times Square because of the Manic Street Preachers? I'm a Manics fan and I got Times Square because the band cited it as one of their favourite films, and because of the references they made to it earlier on in their career:

- The Manics covered Times Square's "Damn Dog" on their debut album, Generation Terrorists (1992), and one of Nicky's lines from the movie ("This one's for Brian Jones and all the other dinosaurs that got kicked out tha' band 1-2-3-4") was included in the album's liner notes. The song was dropped from the American edition of the album, though.

- The Manics named one of their songs, "Roses In The Hospital" (single from the 1993 album, Gold Against The Soul) from a line in Times Square (I think it was one of Nicky's poems).

- In 1993, for stage performances and publicity shots, Manics bassist Nicky Wire wore bankrobber-style eye makeup, like Nicky has in the movie.

Wow.
I didn't know they were into Times Square like that. I only have their single Damn Dog which I love. I have to find their CDs now. They sound cool. I would think "Roses In The Hospital" refers to Nicky's eating roses in the hospital. I don't think her poems mentioned roses.
Thanks for this post.

At one point in the movie, Pamela says "What about "Roses In The Hospital"?" to Nicky, which refers I think to one of her poems (I don't think there was any mention of a poem by that title before that - maybe it was one of the many scenes that got deleted?). Anyway, the music video for the Manics song has some resonance to Times Square, as it features a girl strapped to a hospital bed (the video is included on the Manics DVD, Forever Delayed).

I have to find their CDs now. They sound cool.

Always glad to convert more people into the ways of Manicdom. Make sure you get the UK edition of Generation Terrorists though!

Though I have yet to see the movie, I did come to this movie's board because of the Manics. On this website www.manics.nl I read that this movie influenced Manics (favorite band) so I thought I'd check this out.

I hope to try to find this movie somewhere. :)

p.s. nice to see another Manics fan here.

What Pammy says is, "What about songs? What about the roses in the hospital? What about 'Take a piss, you *beep* That's poetry... Nicky, everything you do, or you say, is poetry." It's a reference to Nicky's performance art of eating the roses.

I made a pretty lengthy post about Times Square on Manics.NL, but it's gone now because the forum got hacked...

Yeah, that makes sense...Thanks for clearing it up!

(reddragon105) yep, same reason here. i was thinking about Damn Dog today and couldn't remember which movie it was from, so i came to look it up.

Also, "Damn Dog" has the distinction of being the only cover song to feature on any of the Manics' studio albums (unless you count the hidden track on the UK/Europe edition of Know Your Enemy).

(reddragon105) only question is, where can i get it from? doesn't seem to be out on DVD yet, all i can find is a VHS on ebay...

It's been released on DVD, but only on Region 1 (America) as far as I know. I got a copy from Amazon last year (also, I visited New York and saw a copy of the Times Square DVD on a shelf in the Virgin Megastore...in Times Square. Which was kinda cute).

I bulked out the film's entry at Wikipedia, for anyone who's interested:

I've seen it. But not in the trailer that's on the DVD. I saw it in 1981 in the trailer that ran on HBO. It lasted maybe two seconds, just enough to let you know it happened.

I'm just sorting through old videos to throw away and I came across Times Square and was wondering why I still had it, so came here to see what the reviews were. Saw the title MSP and it clicked. I was a huge early Manics fan and I would have taped this film to see the references.
