HAPPY 30th, TIMES SQUARE!
Times Square was released October 17th, 1980. It was cold in Waterbury, Connecticut but I went out to experience the magic. I would see it once a day every day until the end of its two week run. Before it came out I had bought the double disc album soundtrack and listened to it over and over. Probably the greatest influence this movie had on me was the music because after that I was a big fan of Suzi Quatro, The Ramones, Pretenders, Cure, Cars, Roxy Music, Lou Reed, Gary Numan, Patti Smith and all other bands in their genres. I also just loved that New York vibe. I hadn't been to NYC yet and was fascinated by it. Later I would visit New York many times and I walked through Times Square remembering the scenes from the movie.
Furthermore, the movie was cool with Trini Alvarado doing her thing, Tim Curry as the best DJ ever and the amazing Robin Johnson in her first role doing quite well. I think the friendship between Nikki and Pammy is what held the movie together. There was an everlasting bond there and you just knew they would call on each other all their lives. So there it is. The movie that holds my record for most times viewed in the theater. And I'm watching it and loving it 30 years later. Long Live Times Square!
