Could this movie be made today?

Amazing to see a movie where a fourteen year old works as a stripper (who keeps her clothes on). With the current moral situation in America, could this film be made today? Reminds me a lot of that other fantastical "tween empowerment" flick Ladies and Gentlemen....the Fabulous Stains with Diane Lane as jailbait punk rocker

That would make a great double feature!

reply

Yes, easily. In fact, all the ever do now is remake stuff ;-]

reply

I think it could be made today, it would probably have a better chance of keeping the lesbian plot elements than in 1980. Back then(I wasn't born) with the coming onslaught of the Reagan era it didn't and they cut the lesbian plot element. But today after Ellen, Will and Grace and Brokeback Mountain it wouldn't bothher anyone.

reply

Starring Miley Cyrus and the gal from I Carly/School of Rock? :-)

reply

No - the Times Square that was back in the 80's no longer exists. All the elements of the gritty, forceful, sleazy danger would be removed if it were remade today.

reply

I think it would be more raw, more nudity. Not at all appropriate for anyone under 35 years old or over 60.

I wouldn't see it.

They should've made a sequel though. Or same movie plot from another prospective.

reply

Nope.

Within 5 minutes, you'd see people whining about glamorizing homelessness and mental illness. Then the next whine would be about the "unrealistic" urban environment because no one was trying to mug, rape or murder two teen white girls every 5 minutes. Or tried to turn them into junkies or prostitutes. After all, we can't show New York City without all the accepted stereotypes, can we?

Basically, Americans are way too whiney and complainy to have a movie like Times Square made today.

That's not even mentioning the Disneyfication of the neighborhood.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

reply

No, it couldn't be remade, but the two characters could be put in a similar environment.

reply

Maybe it could be remade, but in the French Quarter...perhaps Bourbon St.

Although, it's extremely hard for me to believe they could re-create the song "Your Daughter is One" today.

"Hi! I'm Chickie! Fly Me to Quaalude!"

reply

That would be awesome if they did. My best friend and I were basically living that life in New Orleans in 1980, when we went to the theater to see that movie.

Here's my remake casting of Times Square:

Nicky-Kristen Stewart

Pam-Dakota Fanning

Johnny Laguardia-Simon Pegg

Director-Allan Moyle

Animation by MADHOUSE studios

That Times square does not exist now. Perhaps if it took place in another distressed city with that feel. I should also say that two teenage white teenagers would not have survived like they did in this movie. Not only would they have had to deal with competing homeless squatters for the space they secured, but they would have also had to avoid predatory pimps who would have surely added them to their stables and turned them out. The movie is a fantasy not unlike "Pretty Woman".

My idea for the movie is that it would be set in the 1980's just like the original. Also, because it's animated, it wouldn't have to compete with what Times Square is now in people's minds. As well, all that was in the original script and movie that was filmed but cut out, would be included in this version (if two teen males can be seen having sex in the movie Krampack [also known as Nico and Dani], why not teen females?)

Yes, I could see this movie being re-made as an animated movie, but old school animation. Perhaps someone like Ralph Bakshi could do it.

Nice idea! :-)

Bakshi is out of the animation biz, and I want realistic animation as seen in the movies of the late great Japanese animator Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers)-however, Bakshi's animation is a bit too realistic, what with all of its constant rotoscoping. CGI can also be done as well, but it would have to be of the kind of styles seen in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Grendel, The Polar Express, and the video games Batman: Arkham Asylum, the Resident Evil games (in particular the recent direct-to-video movie) and games like the Metal Gear series.

Other animation styles would be like the TV shows The Boondocks and Cowboy Bebop and the CGI art programs Poser, DAZ Studio, and Carrera (which I wish would be used by CGI animation companies more often instead of the overused and childish-looking 'Render Man' style used by Pixar.)

Hmmm...

I was thinking of something along the lines of "American Pop" but I can roll with what you're putting on the table. In any event, the animation would have to be the format because Times Square is completely different from it's look during the eighties.

Now you've got it!

For anyone who has seen a good number of youth-oriented independent or independent-style films the last few years, it wouldn't be hard to make this film or one like it right now, covering the same or similar issues or situations. The Runaways dealt with teenage girls in sexual situations, to name one. And just because Time Square and environs is cleaned up doesn't mean there aren't other parts of New York that don't qualify, or any number of cities that have fallen on hard times recently due to the recession, like Detroit, etc. The only thing missing is the burgeoning punk/new wave music scene or anything remotely like a raw, underground thing going on right now. Sure there are clubs and bands, but what's exciting about it all? Punk, retro, rock, metal, rap, etc., are all marketed genres now. They'd have to find something....

reply

I'm sorry, but this movie would have to be a period piece due to the title alone, and also be an animated film due to the fact that the Times Square seen in the movie no longer exists (an ironic goal of the father of one of the girls in the film now made manifest in real life!) I also want to see an (animated) remake, because I'd like to see the subplots that were cut out of the film put back in (the obvious lesbian relationship, any sex that was going on, plus the scene where they frolic in Central Park that was only seen in the trailer but was cut out of the movie as previously mentioned.) That's the only way this movie could be remade.

reply

I think the movie could be made, with all the complexities and subplots added, BUT they would probably have an 18 and a 20 year old playing the girls. Teenagers are supposed to be children nowadays, and 13 year old actresses playing 13 year old girls who happen to dance at a strip club and maybe have a lesbian relationship would be too much for some (if not most) viewers. If the actress was 18 but looked 13, that would be fine.

It's all incredibly hypocritical, but that's what political correctness has done to people.

reply

Which is why I said the remake should be animated instead of live action. Also, the girls weren't 13-14, but at least 15-17, IIRC.

reply

As far as I know, Trini was 13 and Robin was 15-16 at the time of the making of the movie, which is the age of the characters but I could be wrong.
An animated remake could be a cool idea either way.
