This is very similar to...

...a one-off drama I once saw on UK television many years back. It was called City Sugar, and was about two young girls who run away and a radio DJ tries to convince them over the air, to return home.

anyone else remember this? It was transmitted at least twice.

Sounds obvious. Ive never heard of "City Sugar" before. Thanks for mentioning it, i gotta see it.

Good luck! If you find it anywhere on the net let me know, because I've had a good search. I know I didn't imagine it, because it is listed here on IMDB.

Thanks, will let you know if i come across it.

This isn't a straight comparison but you'll see what I mean.

Times Square seems like a dark side version of Girls Just Want to Have Fun. Both are about teenage girls trying to find their place in the world.

Time Square is dark, gritty, punk music, dense population, urban and kind of menacing.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun is light, fluffy, pop music, spacious, suburban and safe feeling.

The two movies are kind of like flip sides of the same coin.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

I thought it was similar to "Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains". It is about a very inexperienced rock band that becomes famous overnight from media exposure.

... "Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains". As I watched Times Square last night, I also found several similarities to The Fabulous Stains (which I also saw recently). Previous poster already pointed out the main similarities between these two films. It is interesting that, just as with Times Square, the producers of The Fabulous Stains also added an "happy ending", which was not originally planned by the filmmakers. But I would say that the happy ending of Fabulous Stains came out a lot better, more in touch with the rugged and ironic style of the film.
