The movie has a lot of cheesy stuff in it and a few nonsensical parts, but this is a great superhero film. In some respects it surpasses the original, a classic in its own right. I know I'm not alone in this sentiment. I'm curious, why do you think it's IMDB rating is under 7?
I thought this film was nearly as good as the classic original and deserves at least a 7.5 rating.

It's a nearly perfect movie - with the best Superman and Lois ever filmed, the most fun-to-hate villain, the best mix laughs and real drama when the action isn't running, just a great movie overall! The only valid criticism of it is that the special effects are dated, but it's forty years old. Damn movie deserves at least a 9.
6.8 is too much. While the General Zod plot idea is great, the execution by Richard Lester is hammy and poorly done. The whole extra part of the film, with Clark revealing his identity right away and giving up his powers, is a mess. The film also looks like a muddy mess. I still have no idea what could have happened to the negative. I gave it a 5.
