I think your question falls into the same category as something funny in the Lord Of The Rings commentary. Sean Astin said he was being a bit show-offy and asked the editor or someone similiar where the light in a particular scene is coming from. Not missing a beat, the answer was: "Same place the music comes from".....It's a movie, and things in it are not all going to be realistic.

Considering the tone of the film, I imagine it's intentional here though.
It's very much part of Eli's mystery. How he maintains control of such a large and unwieldy project to begin with is amazing; it makes stuff like this look trivial.

I was wondering the same just now. There was definitely an off screen crane operator. Eli could apparently control rotation via foot pedals, but every other movement wasn't him.
