Anyone ever been to the hotel in real life?
Anyone ever visit this hotel? Or drive any of the roads? If so, what was it really like.

shareI didn't know it was a real place. Their website is spooky:

They have a Shining Ball around Halloween and other related activities including a seance:

I just put this place on my bucket list.
I saw that Shining Ball squib! If I had the time, I'd totally go, because I LOVE Colorado in the fall and I can always scrape up some 1920s drag and creepy makeup.
shareNo, and as much as I love this movie, and as much as I like to come back and rewatch it every couple of years, I’ll happily take a pass at staying anywhere that inspired or stood in for the Overlook Hotel.

I'm pretty sure that one of the "inspirations" for the Outlook Hotel in the movie -- on the INSIDE, not the outside (which I think was an Oregon hotel) is the Ahwanee Lodge in Yosemite Park in northeastern California.
I have been there to visit -- not stay -- and it looks a lot like the Outlook. You'll feel it if you go there.
This is true. I've been to the Ahwahnee hotel in Yosemite a couple of times and the Grand Room looks just like the room where Jack is typing his novel.
One difference from the movie is that there is no grand staircase like the one Jack tumbles down after taking a bat to the head. You definitely get a feel for the movie walking through it from one end to the other.
Yes I have! Did the shining tour while I was vacationing in Estes. Note: that’s the hotel from the mini-series, but also where king himself was staying when he got the influence to write it.
The exteriors of the Kubrick version are that of the Timberline Lodge out by Mount Hood, OR.
Yes, I’ve been to the Mt. Hood location. Which is the outside of the “overlook”. It’s beautiful. I used to work there. In room 237 somebody carved “all work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy.” on one of the bunk beds.

Hope that really freaked out a later guest.
