Here's a new topic: Which of his movies has stayed with you the longest (not nesc. your fav, just can't get it out of your mind)? Was it Scanners because of the exploding head?
For me it was Videodrome, and the scene of the gun becoming part of the guy's hand...
The devil you know is less scary than the saint you don't-which is a bit of a shame really...
The scene in Videodrome where Max is watching the video of Brian O'Blivion as the executioner ties him down and strangles him, when Max shouts "What do you want?" at the TV and the executioner removes "his" mask to reveal Deborah Harry, who looks right at him and says, "We want YOU, Max." That creeped me out when I was 13 and still does today. One of my favorite scenes ever. However, the bit in The Fly where Jeff Goldblum is trying to convince Geena Davis to go away, the bit about insect politics and "I'm an insect who dreamed he was a man and loved it, but the dream is over and the insect is awake," that's the one that has really lodged in my head over the years. But, you know, Cronenberg is my favorite director, so his films are always on my mind.
videodrome stayed in my mind for weeks after i first saw it. i am still piecing together what happened. what was real and what was all in Max's mind... and what the new flesh was!
When Max takes refuge on a derelict boat in an abandoned harbour, where Nicki appears to him on television. She tells him he has weakened Videodrome, but in order to completely defeat it, he has to "leave the old flesh." The television then shows an image of Max shooting himself in the head, which causes the set to explode, splattering the deck of the ship with bloody, human intestines. Imitating what he has just seen on TV, Max says his final words, "Long live the New Flesh", and then he pulls the trigger.
Wow nobody mentioned Shivers. I would say that as far as imagery goes, Videodrome stays a long time but Shivers is the longest lasting, it has the most disturbing concept... the movie is just extremely unsettling
