Does anyone thinks this pre-dates the X-Men movies?

Afterall Scanners is similar to that film franchise with the same Sci-fi thriller action theme about secret minorities who are mutants and wants to be respected.

Except the X-men films in turn are based on the comic that first saw the light of day in September 1963?

Scanners took some of the ideas from X-Men then to use in their films.

Of course, the X-Men (a Marvel imprint) were "inspired" by DC's Doom Patrol, which had hit the newstands a few months earlier.

I agree with RobBase086-1, scanners did draw inspiration from X men

David Cronenberg is a visionary, but to be fair, the "X-Men" comic book series was already a popular line years before the movie was released.

Ahem...From Scanners Trivia Page:

William S. Burroughs' 1959 novel 'Naked Lunch' contains a chapter concerning "Senders", a hostile organization of telepaths bent on world domination, a clear literary inspiration for this film.

While "Scanners" did come out years before the first X-Men movie, or even a few years before the animated TV series, X-Men did come out in the early 1960s.

However, the premise for "Scanners" is a little bit more believable, and even partially rooted in actual medical history.

In the movie, the drug that was given to pregnant women in the 1950s and 1960s, that created the scanners, was Ephemerol. Originally designed to ease discomfort during pregnancy, it caused genetic mutation birth defects in the developing fetuses that gave rise to scanning abilities.

There was a real drug in the 1950s, called Thalidomide. It was used as sedative. Thalidomide was discovered to cause birth defects in fetuses when given to pregnant women.

Then, there is the organic compound Thimerosal, which was used in many vaccines. There is some debate whether this substance is a link in causing autism in young children.

The idea for Scanners came from Cronenberg's own movie "Stereo" (1969). It could have been inspired by "X-Men" but it's hard to comfirm.

most film critics and scholars have acknowledged that Scanners was at least partially inspired by the X-Men comics. I wouldn't say that X-Men was the only, or even the main source of inspiration, but I think it's pretty clear that a lot of themes used in Scanners were borrowed from X-Men.

I've only stated that Scanners is essentially just a gory, R-rated version of X-Men, or really, any superhero movie for that matter.

If anything, the 2008 movie Push (w/ Chris Evans and Dakota Fanning) borrows heavily from Scanners.

when i first saw X3 the scene of Prof X verses Jean Grey in the house had me immediatly think 'Scanners climax'

Scanners is totally a (hard) R rated, ultra realistic version of XMEN

talking of comic book movies etc i recently rewatched Scanners for the first time in years (i actually feel asleep it was on so late which annoyed me as i really wanted to see it again - so next day i ordered the trilogy on dvd cheap so i'll be able to watch it again properly and the sequels ive never even seen ) anyway b4 i couldnt keep my eyes open i also got abit of an Incredible Hulk vibe to certain scenes (e.g. when Vale is tied up and thrashing about it was abit like Bixby before he was about to turn), the score at times was reminsant of the Hulk scores (scanning/banner turning) ...plus some of the set designs, general look of everything etc had a Hulk feel to them (i guess obviously as it was made at the same time as the show) and also the way in which you are always on edge/scared watching it because at any given moment someone could scan - like the way any moment Bixby could turn (which terrifed me as a kid)

one other thing i thought is that Scanners is very much like Star Wars/Empire in its set up (Vale/Luke...Ruth/ObiWan….Revok/Vader....JO'Neil/Leia - the whole rebel/underdog vs the all powerful empire thing being revealed to be an almightly family feud with the 'new hope' going up against his more powerful family member (who wants him to join his cause) at the climax alone with what hes learned from the mentor who has been killed)
