Don't remake it, keep the story going
There's so much you can do with the concept. The sequels, while lacking in certain budgetary regards, showed the vast storytelling landscape the franchise can explore. If someone is still trying to get the money together to remake it, they should really think about telling a new story. Add to the existing franchise, don't remake the original.
