There are some very promising extras listed here. A commentary would have been awesome, though.
In heaven everything is fine.

I love the early shorts, AND Fast Company, so I guess I'm just a hopeless fanboy LOL.

I became a fan when I saw The Fly in the theater in its original run. I was so overwhelmed by the intensity of the film, when I left the theater, I had to sit down on a bench because I thought I might throw up or pass out.
My favorite films at the moment are Crash, eXistenZ, and Scanners. My least favorite is A Dangerous Method, not to say it's a bad film, it's just so far removed from his earlier works. I have a copy of Cosmopolis, but haven't watched it yet.
I've enjoyed all his commentaries thus far. My favorite is Crash, which as far as I know is only on the OOP Criterion laser.
I still call myself a Cronenberg fan even though I liked his earlier films much more than his recent work, because what he produces now does not affect his earlier work, or change my enjoyment of it.
In heaven everything is fine.

Here's a link to an MP3 of the Crash commentary. Never tried it, don't know if it works. Found it on the Crash IMDb board a loong time ago.

Which release of Rabid has a commentary? I have the "Roger Corman Presents" version which has a few extras but no commentary. Finally found most of my Cronenberg DVDs LOL! AFAIK there are no other releases with a commentary that you don't already know about.

Nah, you're in the clear. I'm a Cronenberg fan who really only likes about 4 of his films -- Scanners, The Brood, Videodrome and Crash. Parts of Rabid are cool and M Butterfly certainly has its moments, but the rest, meh. Cronenberg I think is a better idea guy with a few great images lodged in his mind than an actual narrative filmmaker, and some of his actors give amazing performances in his films -- Genvieve Buoujold, Samantha Eggar, Deborah Harry, the guy who played Barry Convex -- but you kinda have to just roll with the goofiness that surrounds them.

Spotted this in Horrorhound last night and was on amazon within mimnutes.
Slightly disappointing that there is no commentary or aparently any recent DC interviews (unless he turns up on the effects doc), but the Ironside interview will no doubt make up for this, as will the new transfer.
Now just need to rebuy Shivers from Arrow and The Brood when that comes out and I should be done for a while.

He may have been too busy with the production of 'Map of the Stars' to be more directly involved with this release, other than supervising the transfer. Just a thought. Though you could be right and he doesn't have anything left to say on this particular film combined with the fact that it was a tough shoot for Cronenberg to begin with. I think 'Cosmopolis' is the only recent film of his that has a commentary track, though for that one he may have been contractually obligated to contribute for the DVD/BD release.

Thanks for the clarification. I rented 'A Dangerous Method' when it first came out, but never bothered to peruse the supplements. Did 'existenz' have a commentary track for the US Region 1 DVD? I thought that was for the Canadian edition only, but I might be wrong. The Echo Bridge BD didn't have a commentary track, I know that for sure.

That's right. One of the last Criterion laserdiscs before they switched to DVD. Criterion needs to license 'Crash' from Warners ASAP and reissue the commentary track for a long overdue BD release. I would also love to hear the John Sturges commentary track from Criterion's 'Bad Day at Black Rock' LD.
I was becoming a teenager back in the mid-late 90s and had a slighter older friend that was wealthy enough to buy laserdiscs. I remember first seeing a bunch of Hitchcock via laserdisc and my friend also had the Criterion LD's of 'Akira' and 'Raging Bull'.

That's a pretty great story.
Over a year ago for a book club I was in we read Ballard's original novel. The majority of the readers in our club are female and responded very negatively to the book. Not necessarily because of the content, more to do with the central theme and Ballard's particular style. They certainly didn't find any of it erotic! I suggested the Cronenberg adaptation as a movie night, but it didn't go over well. Big shocker...
Maybe we are closer to getting a Criterion BD in the future. There has been rumblings on criterionforum.org in the past.

Nope. I think the book was enough. Oh well...
shareI know there is quite a bit in print about his thoughts on Scanners, but to be honest I would like to see a something on film. Besides, Cronenberg on Cronenberg, while a great book, is quite old now, and even if his opinions haven't changed it would still be nice to see a short interview about the film with him. But nevermind, it is understandable.
Though from memory there is something on that career retrospective documentary on the UK Brood special edition DVD of a few years ago (the two disc one) which I think goes up to Existenz or thereabouts, everything else is from the early eighties.
BTW that Criterion sale sounds great, I wasn't aware of this and will make haste in purchasing other things from them, though I suppose I should priobably read their international shipping rates first...
Also, it's annoying that Criterion have gone back to region 1. It would have been great if they had stayed region 0 for a while so I could make the most of the blu-rays. Oh well, DVD is fine.

I *really* wish it had an interview with Robert Silverman! If Criterion does The Brood, hopefully they'll chat him for that release.
shareI bought the Criterion DVD for only nineteen bucks at a local Barnes & Noble in Central New Jersey.
