I didn't see this film at the theater in 1981. I saw it on a giant old fashioned clunky VHS about 4 years later. At that time.. Dr. Ruth was in popular culture something quite different. Did anyone else think it was funny too?

shareno not at all. The way he delivered his name in those McGoohanesque tones made a potential silly sounding name very creepy 'My name is Dr Paul Roooth...I am head of the Scannah program' or whatever the line was.
anyway Scanners isn't exactly a laugh fest where you would break up over a name. also in most Cronenberg movies the characters have strange names. I think its to add to the sense that's theres something off/not quite right/downright creepy.
