There was a medication given to pregnant women in the late 1950s, called thalidomide, which also had nasty side effects. But that's where the similarities end. Thalidomide (Google it) was then prescribed to treat morning sickness and nausea, but was later found to create deformed limbs in newborns, unlike the "invisible" effects of the movie's ephemerol.
It was an awful tragedy. Thalidomide has now come back: it is thought that it can successfully treat certain types of cancer.
