Worth remaking now Sahara is a hit?

With Clive Cussler very supportive of Sahara do you think the time has come for someone to follow his novel a bit more closely and remake this.
With modern effects this could be a very good film. Oh as well as some decent acting and a decent script.

As far as I remember, it's about a 600 page book: no movie is ever really going to do it justice.

Also, since we now know that the Titanic couldn't be raised in any viable state, it would seem kind of pointless.

reply

Last i heard, Clive Cussler was very unsupportive of the Sahara movie, saying they did it all wrong and vowed never to deal with hollywood again.

Has he changed his mind?

reply

Yes, I heard that, too, but I heard it from a person on here who hated the movie Sahara (which I loved by the way). The message boards here for Sahara seem to show it being a flop, but I dunno why.. I thoght it was a good movie. Either way, I wouldn't want to see a remake of Raise the Titanic. I've never seen the first one, and, as someone else said, we know now that the Titanic is broken in two and cannot be rasied.

I really don't know what Cussler thinks about Sahara, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is mad about Sahara. They left out one thing (probably so the American Public didn't think it was true) and the Mines of... was it Tabeeza??... weren't in this movie. I haven't read the book for at least 2 years, so there's probably more that I don't remember.

Still, Sahara was good and I need to go rent RtT. Is it any good?

"I need to go rent RtT. Is it any good?"

Not really. It has occasional moments, but they threw out most of the good pages of the book, and bodged up the rest.

About the only impressive part is the actual raising of the Titanic, which was great for its time (though I haven't seen it in years, so it may look like poop by modern standards :)).

It's bizarre, really. The book was a huge seller at the time, and must have seemed like a guaranteed money-spinner... they must have worked very hard to screw it up.

SAHARA is not considered a hit.

It failed to recoup its costs in North America and overseas business was below average.

I haven't seen the movie, but from the trailer it looks like it doesn't really bear much resemblance to the book...

Again, it's a really thick and convoluted book to turn into a 90-minute movie, but if you buy a book to adapt, it's probably a good idea to at least remotely stick to the plot :).

This film needs a remake I hope it's 160 or at least 131 Minutes that'll help some but I
think they should insert a few Assaigns And keep the love triangle In the movie from the novel But keep it PG-13 The Novel was only 300 pages long sahara is a bit longer More action would hve to be inserted in this RTT Remake or Else it wot be able to compete with the Newr Thrillers
Maybe a few elements form the Manchurian candidate will help?

It's kind of pointless now that we know definitevly that the Titanic was torn in half and is rusting away at the bottom of the ocean.

there was an article on the numa website, www.numa.net, that said cussler hated the sahara movie and even sued paramount for changing the screenplay on him, i can't find the article anymore because they edited out the ending of the article that had that part because it was irelavent to the rest of the article.

this is from one site

"Cussler recently optioned all 14 of his novels featuring Dirk Pitt® to Crusader Entertainment with script and casting approval, Variety's "Write Stuff" reported. SAHARA is now in development with Paramount. Cussler's non-fiction bestseller The Sea Hunters, about shipwrecks, is being developed by Eco-Nova Productions into a 19-episode television series, to air on the National Geographic channel in the U.S., with Cussler himself introducing each episode."

So you never know.

Conventional wisdom says that if you are going to remake a movie, you should remake a really awful movie and leave the classics alone. "Raise the Titanic" was a really awful movie. As seen in Sahara, the key plot point in telling a Clive Cussler story is the interplay between Dirk Pitt and Al Giordano. They are lifelong friends. This point was completely ignored in Raise the Titanic.

The movie should be remade, with the story adhering directly to the book. Even though we know the Titanic broke in two, the ship should be portrayed as intact. The public will ignore the reality if the acting is good, believable, and the stunts done correctly. In the book, Dirk is left unconcious in a helicopter dangling precarously from the side of the Titanic in a hurricane while a spec ops unit prepares to board the Titanic in the storm.

For theaters, it should be done PG-13, but the DVD should have the book's nude scene inserted into the movie-not just found in the special features portion of the DVD. A strong non prudish actress should play that role.

The story is a strong entertaining one and it should be done in movie form.

I heard that Cussler said that after Raise the Titanic, he would never let Hollywood do any of his movies but he did anyway. Lets remember this is as close as we get to the U.S.A. having our own James Bond, done right it could be just as good a series but lets remember Bond looks corny sometimes and the only part of the Flemmings books they keep is the titles the stories are pure hollywood. Why not show that same open mindness to the Pitt series. RTT was the first book I read and wouldn't have done that if I hadn't seen the movie which was only 1/2 of the book by the way. I have now read them all, although I don't like Kurt Austin, the stories are ok but they should just be Pitt novels. But I would like to see more Pitt movies

reply

If this movie were redone I could just see pages and pages of goofs on the IMDB. When the book and film were made there were far more fantasy elements allowed due to the Titanic not being found yet and thus the writers were able to make their own rules. People just would not accept a movie made today where the titanic was not split in two as it's a known fact. Also the ship has deteriorated severely and isn't nearly as beautiful as it was depicted in RTT or when she first sailed.

It would be like redoing the move JFK after Kennedys true assasin were finally revealed.

should not be remade. this is the WORST movie ever made!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mmmmmmm Bacon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it'll be great as long as they use Matthew and William H as Pitt and Sandecker

One book i think would make a good film is one the title of which i cant remember (maybe treasure?!?!). Anyway the plot deals with fidning the alexandria librabry in Texas and i think could be an awesome film, although cut some of the more ridiculous parts of the plot...The gorgeous UN sec General who falls in love with Pitt has to go for example, although maybe keep a car cahse in coloraden mountains could be good. But an opening battle of romans vs Red indians would be great, and the antarctic Spec ops raid on a captured ocean liner could be quite impressive too...
One thing i dont like about Pitt in general is that he is TOO good...a USAF major with special forces training, who is head of special projects at NUMA, an underwater agency (how the hell did he do that?) and how can he afford all those antique cars etc? One book i felt just plain stupid is one where US buys canada off the uk in WW1. Uk sends James bond (yes really, although it does not name him as such) to stop this coming to light, and ends with pitt and bond being best friends, after a pitched battle between US marines and Royal marines in the new england hills or somewhere...

The book you are thinking of his " Night Probe " ( 1980 roughly so I think it man ). I agree that even within the context of the fantasy that makes up Clive Cusslers' novels it is just bad enough in its' realism that it would be unfilmable.

Not that it would happen, but I am curious if this was remade more accurately where they need to raise the front half or something.
