DVD Release

Are there any current plans for this film to be placed on DVD? I'd like to be able to buy a widescreen version for $5.50 at WalMart one day. I heard that the movie went over budget and bankrupt the studio, so "could" it even be released?

amazon.com has it listed to be released on 1/24/06 as part of a double feature disk containing raise the titanic (1980) and man friday (1975)it will be released by artisan entertainment.

And, not surprisingly, since it's being distributed by Live/Artisan/Lionsgate Films, both this film (and it's double featured "Man Friday") are being chopped from their original aspect ratio of 2.35:1 to 1.33:1 (or pan-and-scan).

Actually The Original aspect ratio for Raise the titanic is 2:40.1

I'm just in the process of watching the Australian DVD right now, and quiet frankly, it's the best version you're likely to get at this point, especially considering the obigatory botch-it-and-run job pulled by Lions Gate on that ridiculous double feature R1 disc. The Aussie R4 disc came to around $16 US shipped. It is indeed non-anamorphic, so those watching it on giganto-screens will definitely notice the difference, but on a 36" or smaller monitor, it's looks phenomenal, and at 2.20:1, the picture is the widest currently available. The surround sound, though not 5.1, is properly enveloping front and rear, especially whenever that classic John Barry score weaves its way through the proceedings. Personally, I think this film has held up quite nicely over the years, and I like it now as much as I liked it then. Clive Cussler is full of it.
