De Niro or Hurt?

Which performance do you prefer?
William Hurt in The Elephant Man or Robert De Niro in Raging Bull?

reply

You mean John Hurt.

Tough choice really. Both extraordinary powerful performances. It's without saying how great De Niro was in this. But John Hurt delivered one of the greatest beautifully nuanced performances ever caught on film.

This is the few times the academy should of gave it a tie.

Deniro for me .the jail scene is still the greatest acting ive seen punching the wall i think everyman at some point in their life has been in that frame of mind and can relate to that.deniros greatest performance hands down.
The elephant man john hurt deserved an oscar his performance was both tragic and heartfelt captured the emotional side excellently shame he was up against deniro that year any other year the statue would be his.

When i first got here i said to the owner listen where's the toilet.he said your in it

The problem with an extreme make up/mask like that in The Elephant Man. Is that it easily can become comical. But John Hurt played it perfectly with the right tone and balance. He had great ability with his voice and mannerisms to evoke such powerful emotions from the viewer.

It's not easy to play a character like that without making it look ridiculous.

Speaking of William Hurt, he should have been nominated for "Altered States" that same year.

Anyhow, while I do respect John Hurt's tremendous performance in TEM, Bobby De Niro's all-time great performance in Raging Bull (in a class by itself, in this guy's opinion) deserved every acting statue.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

Edward Woodward in Breaker Morant. And then there's Nicholson...

Definitely Hurt. De Niro was great but I think Raging Bull was only good at best, whereas The Elephant Man is in my opinion one of the greatest films ever made.
