$18 million budget??

How did this movie get so inflated? It cost more than the special-effects-laden studio blockbusters at the time; Star Wars ($11 million), Jaws ($7 million), Alien ($11 million). Raging Bull cost as much as Jaws and Star Wars combined! What the hell was it spent on, and why would the studio allow it to balloon to that cost?

Religion should be made fun of. If I believed that stuff, I'd keep it to myself. -Larry David

Period design, extras, most of all time. It took ten weeks alone to film the boxing scenes, with all the effects, extras and camera set ups. It took a further 10 weeks for the dramatic scenes. They had to shut down production for DeNiro to gain the weight. That also cost time and money. The one I want to know about is why The King Of Comedy cost 20 million.
