Brain damage?
Could the brain damage be what caused LaMotta's impulsive and erratic behavior? Throughout the movie he just "doesn't understand..." why he behaves the way he does. As it if is something out of his control.

shareIt does make you wonder doesn't it? I mean, look at what is known about concussions and head injuries in sports. I recently watched a segment of 'W-5'(it is a Canadian news magazine program) in which they spoke to two former NHL players about repeated concussions. Mike Peluso talked about how it affected all facets of his life, including his personality. He had suicidal thoughts, still does suffer seizures, etc. so it is bound to have had an impact!
