I just wrote a longer response, but then lost it, so here’s a synopsis of what I had written:
- Yes, the original running time of the film was 140 minutes, but over the years underwent a series of cuts by director Blatty.
- No, I have never seen the 140 minute version and, to the best of my knowledge, it’s not available on DVD, VHS, or laser disc (or at least not for mass consumption)
- The length of the movie has varied from a high of 140 minutes to a low of 99 minutes with 130 and 118 minute versions in between.
- The 118 minute version was released on DVD in 2003 and is the so-called “director’s cut” and the one that you will find on Amazon.com and the like.
- The special features section of the 2003 DVD release contains the deleted scenes, so you are able to get a good idea of how the original version plays out, though not sequentially.
- On the audio commentary featured on the 2003 DVD release, director Blatty quips that some day he’d like to go back and add about twenty minutes to the film, thus bringing it roughly back to its original 140 minute length.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
Thanks for the info.
I just saw the film for the first time a couple of weeks ago and loved it. The cinematography was amazing, and I loved the music video type opening, unusual but brilliant. Overall an excellent film. Can't believe I've never seen it before, or even heard of it.
I actually bought the Region 4 version, which is 118mins I think, but unfortunately has no extras and wasn't even anamorphic, so looks like I'll be buying it again.
Thanks.

For what it's worth, it also has at least two different titles. The other title in 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Killer Kane'.
The way I first saw it (and it became my favorite film at that time), was on ON TV (remember ON TV? - where you had to press the button to continue?).
I had just gotten my first VHS recorder. And they announced they would show this movie ONCE, and it replaced at the LAST MINUTE some other movie. I, for some reason, decided to recorded it. Afterwards I almost ran the tape into the ground I watched it so many times!
I now have it on DVD, but have no idea what 'version' the one I had on VHS tape was...
Yeah, Twinkle, Twinkle Killer Kane is a great title.
I'm in Scotland - we're about 15 years behind with everything, so no ON TV here.
I bought the Region 4 Dvd, which has no extras, so I'll have to buy it again for the commentary and other extras. It's a great film, I'm surprised I haven't seen it till recently.

Yes, 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Killer Kane' was the title of Blatty's book.
shareI've seen a version of this movie that no one else seems to have seen. Maybe it's this 140 minute version. The version I saw has actual on screen rape in the bar scene. Are there any details to this extended version anywhere?
