DVD subtitles?

I recently got the Region 1 DVD, which lists among the special features subtitles in English and francais. However, there are no subtitles at all on it! This is extremely disappointing, since I think my near-deaf dad would enjoy this movie if he could follow the dialogue.

Is the box wrong, or did I get a dud? (I've heard of non-conforming, e.g. demo, DVDs making there way into the commercial packaging before.) Anyone else have subtitles in his/her Region 1 DVD?

PS The non-anamorphic transfer is a real disappointment too. The picture quality on a big screen TV is downright bad. Warners could have put a little (no, more like a lot) more effort into this one. On the plus side, the director's commentary feature is excellent.

I rented this from Netflix and also got no subtitles.

I had the same problem. I am hearing impaired and I need the captions or subtitles, which according to the box cover were on the DVD. They weren't. consequently I was unable to follow the film. There was a director's commentary and some outtakes, but the alternative ending, also promised on the box, was not shown. Rip off! Warners should have paid attention. to what they were doing.
