How is Kane's suicide supposed to be a shock that is curative therapy?

A related question, I read that there is more than one version made for the ending. How many are they? I'm guessing only 2 in all, one in which Kane commits suicide & the other in which he dies at the hand of the biker who stabs him. Is that it?

Cutshaw didnt believe in "good" and refused to accept that any man would ever lay down his life for another.

Kane DID lay down his life for Cutshaw...the "shock" of this in turn helped Cutsaw with his (other) issues.

..and yes, those are the two different endings that I have seen..

It aint like it used to be, but it'll do 
