Unwatchable.

Really tried to see this but it's unbearable.

I mostly agree, specially for the first half of the movie. The last 40 % aprox, gets passable, a little bit, somehow.
Stacy Keach is always interesting and the young Scott "Hershel" Wilson was nice too, but yes, it demanded TRUE effort for me too.

Shrug. I loved it. What William Peter Blatty finds funny, I find funny too.

Odd. I believe it to be a masterpiece. Something tells me we'll never be cronies.

I guess it is one of those love it or hate it films. I first saw it in my early 20's and I was blown away by it. I have just ordered myself a copy on Amazon as It has been many years since I saw it in its entirety. Sure I've seen the bar scene on youtube and still feel slightly ashamed of how satisfying it is! Looking forward to its arrival.

Nice. I hope you enjoy revisiting it. If you haven't seen END OF THE ROAD, I recommend that as well. Equally brilliant and audacious as THE NINTH CONFIGURATION, and it boasts another stunning performance by the great Stacy Keach. There's a gorgeous Warner U.S. DVD of it.

I can see the OP's point.

I think the film is a bit hard to get into at first, probably because it's quite unconventional. The humour in the first half wasn't really for me (it was okay though) and I did find it a little slow (I've seen other slow films Tarkovsky, Gance's Napoleon and Shoah which is nearly 10 hours long to name a few). I also thought the biker bar scene was a bit out of place, even though it was a big part of the plot.

That said I did quite enjoy the film, it was interesting, I liked that it was different and it's pacing and narrative was what set it apart. It challenged convention and dealt with existential type themes. I must say Stacy Keach was very good in this film, along with Scott Wilson. I will look out for 'End of the Road'.

That's not an uncommon reaction.

I am from the other camp - who consider it a masterwork and one of the best American films of the last 25 years.

But I have freinds who just dont see what I see - but that ok.

How can you say that with a straight face? Why is it a masterwork?

reply

I can't explain why I love it so much.

Its makes me laugh

It makes me think.

It's like no other film I have ever seen.

But I get that a lot of people do not like it - which I understand.

It's not a point of view that I ever come across. I only ever come across people who love it or who have never even heard of it. I'm surprised. Not that I think it's impossible to dislike it but it's so rarely seen that only people who know that they are going to love it bother to seek it out.

well I never think like the rest.

That's a good thing.

Personally I love this movie. At least you gave it a shot.

well I tried to see it on the computer, maybe that has something to do with it, hopefully I'll find it on tv someday.

It's terrible and I hate myself for finishing it (and buying it)
The only other time I can think of that a horror novelist and scriptwriter has taken up the role of director, we got Maximum Overdrive. I really should have thought of that *before*...
