shareIf you have HBO/MAX it is currently in their "classics" category.
I just finished watching it over the weekend and found it compelling and engaging. Many other comments on this message board are dated and precede the move over to Moviechat.org so I haven't responded since I can't give my reply to the idiots that posted.
I'd say this movie touched on some pretty gritty subject matter for its time and place (the IRA terrorism and presence in British culture in the 60s and 70s) and unlike its American counterparts the story line binds the fate of their characters more succinctly as the marriage of crime and political terrorism do and don't go hand in hand. Hoskins is really riveting as the leader of the London underworld and I can see why Francis Ford Coppola cast him in "The Cotton Club". You can also see the obvious influence this movie has on subsequent British gangster movies that followed in the 80s, 90s and up to today.
Helen Mirren really holds her own as Hoskin's love interest and partner in crime.
My only criticism was the casting of English guys playing New York Mafioso. You could tell they looked and sounded nothing like Americans but I suppose the budget wasn't there to bring in someone like Joe Spinell, Michael Gazzo or even Henry Silva to play NYC gangsters.
Twice. A little dated but good film.
shareI saw it with my dad when it first came out, and we loved it. Watched it some years ago with my son, who was then about 15 (and fascinated by London gangland), and he loved it. Good movie.
