First UK TV showing

Was this first shown on ITV in the UK - some time in the mid 1980s? I only say that, as I remember seeing an advert for it before Dempsey and Makepeace during that time. Does anyone know? I also read in a trivia piece in Empire film magazine that the swearing was cut from the teletext subtitiles. Can anyone confirm this?

Only seen it once in TV can't remember was a very long time ago

I know that Channel 4 holds the rights to it nowadays - and that it pops up on Film 4 every so after - but back to my original question - anyone?

I remember when it first aired on ITV (around 84-85ish) I think the language was intact (I distinctly recall Shand barking "Well get a faaaacking move on" to bent copper Parky, as he drove off....leading to an ad break) because I was hovering over our video recorder, waiting to press pause (ahhhh, the good old days of recording TV shows)

But they may have been minor edits to the violence (the close up of the guard nailed to floor was missing) if my memory serves me well

"If you're lying.....I'll be back"

When it was on TV around 1985 the scene where Harold kills Jeff was basically cut out. He hits him with bottle on head then it goes straight to Harold holding him, then went straight to Harold walking off the boat. Also lots of other things were cut out, like when Harold describes the IRA (probably considered too sensitive), and the scene when Razors slashes Errol was so heavily edited that it looked more like he was slapping Errol's bum rather than chopping his ass-cheeks with a machete.

Ahhh - thanks for all of these replies. Interesting. But - it was the days when films tended to get butchered by the TV companies in the UK. Yeah, the stuff about the IRA might had been a bit too sensitive considering the time.

From what I remember... it was shown over Easter in the mid-80's but not on Good Friday, as you might expect, but the following Easter Monday on ITV. There were cuts - the broken bottle bit in particular - but the f-words were sometimes cut out and sometimes not! To my old memory anyway... ;o)
