Everybody get over it

This film is not child porn. Ooh, they smoke Marlboros. Ooh, they're doing jumping jacks in front of men. Ooh, they're talking about having sex. And having sex. Offscreen.

If the reason this isn't on dvd is because it's salacious then explain why the 1974 "Born Innocent" is.

Look at the films of the late 70's/early 80's. "10". Beach Girls. Spring Break. Malibu Beach. They were genre movies that actually were about sex(and actually showed nudity!) And they were fun. Little Darlings was one of the few that had a message. It's only in the past 10 or 15 years that sex has become forbidden in entertainment. Now an R rating means violence, which apparently is fine with the Moral Majority. But focus on sex and show nudity and the prudes come out of the woodwork. Have you seen Rambo? Children bayonetted. Arms and legs flying everywhere. People being decapitated and gutted. This is now acceptable entertainment.

So you take a cute film like Little Darlings and turn it into a call to arms for your morality soapbox. Do you realize that the message of the film is that the girl who had sex suffered, while the girl who didn't was happy and well adjusted?

Maybe it's the highly vocal prudes who are keeping this film from being released. That would be a shame. But the reality is it's probably song publishing rights.

Just get over it.

I highly doubt the reason it's not been released on DVD is because some people find it "salacious". Maybe in addition to the song publishing rights issue there's just not a big enough demand for this movie to come out on DVD? Just because people point out things here and there in movies that they find to be inappropriate doesn't mean they have something against the movie as a whole or object to it's DVD release. I happen to love this movie and I would like to have it on DVD. There are any number movies that have scenes or aspects I find to present things I may not agree with, but that doesn't mean I hate the movie altogether and object to its existence. The whole point of these boards is to discuss opinions about movies. Others may agree with those views or not, but discussing them doesn't equate preaching from a morality soapbox, it's just stating one person's POV.

reply

This board is filled with people calling the film child porn. Preaching and stating one's moral POV are the same thing. My POV is that it's just a film, and I think a very entertaining film. A product of it's time. And I get tired of people looking at it from today's PC perspective.

I'm gonna have to disagree that stating one's moral opinion is the same thing as preaching. Generally, "preaching", as it's being referred to in this case, is pretty much saying "This is what I believe, so it's what everybody else should believe as well, and if you disagree you're wrong just because I say so." It rests on an arrogant, holier-than-thou attitude. There is a difference between that and merely stating what you believe to be right or wrong. A person can state his/her moral beliefs on something without that type of attitude. We all have different views about right or wrong and what we like or don't like and we're all entitled to make those views known. Sometimes others will share those opinions and sometimes they won't. There's not much anybody can do about that, everyone sees things differently and all we can do is agree to disagree. The bottom line is, if we don't like what others have to say about things, we don't have to listen, in this case, we don't have to read the message boards. It's not often possible to change people's views. We all see things differently and the whole point of boards like this is to show that.

reply

Thanks for the definition, but I think I'll continue to read the boards. And if these people get upset about Little Darlings, I can't imagine what they'd say about the Bad News Bears.

reply

That was a pretty funny movie.

reply

And so politically incorrect that I'm surprised that TCM shows it on Sunday afternoons. Every conceivable racial epithet is used, none of which are allowed on tv now. And yes, funny movie.

reply

"Every conceivable racial epithet is used"

That's probably why it gets a pass. If it was only targeting a specific group, it would be different, but if it's not discriminatory in who it's making of, it actually comes across as more funny than insulting.
