What are 15 year olds doing at summer camp?

I'm just curious...granted I'm not too hot on the idea of summer camp in general, I mean you want to learn archery and canoeing and stuff, that I can understand, day camp for little kids I can understand, summer camp for 10 year olds, I can understand that too, but just what in the hell are 15 year olds doing at summer camp? I mean why would kids that old be at camp who aren't working as counselors?

The camp I worked at in Vermont during the summer of 2002 was for girls aged 9-16. The 16 years olds were CIT's (counsellors in training), and we had two girls who were assistant staff, as they were too old to be campers, but too young to be full staff (17), and had been at that camp the last 6 summers or something like that..

I didn't think it was uncommon for kids that age to still go to camp? Maybe mine was a rarity? Although I did do pre summer training at another camp outside NY City that was still setting up, and they were going to have boys and girls up to about 15 or so... anyone else have input?

I was under the impression that all summer camps were for ages 9-16...so I saw no problem with the movies at all.

And of course, someone losing their virginity at summer camp, is a very common story!

I went to summer camp when I was 15. It was only a week though. We canoed down a river and camped out everynight.

I think it's pretty common. Lots of church summer camps are for the youth groups and those kids are usually pre-high to high school age.

I've been to girl scout camp, as an overnighter and as a day camper. The older ones (cadettes and seniors) were like really old...mid to late teens.

In some ways, I wish there were summer camps for ADULTS.

lroy - I am so with you. I never went to summer camp and feel like I missed out on a part of childhood!

The summer camp I went to had an age limit of 12...

I couldn't find one after that, which was too bad because I really liked it!

Here's to those who wish me well...

I never went to an overnight camp, just Girl Scout Camp, which was day camp. Even though I hate cook-out food and have trouble falling asleep anywhere but my house, I too felt like I was missing out. I always wanted to go because movies/tv shows always made it look so fun and I wanted the cliche camp love story.

I went to "Camp Laney" for boy's which I think goes up to 15 (as Counselors in Training)---I only went when I was 13. We were just at that age, still scared to get in too much trouble to go up to the girls camp.....funny.....and at that time, LD had already come out..and I remember having "Bed Checks" and them coming in and looking for Playboy books, etc.....There's *ALWAYS* one kid with the "stash"...

I worked at a summer camp about 14 years ago as an art counselor. The kids were aged from like 5 to 16. Many of the teenage kids had been coming to the same camp every year until 16.

I went to camp until 14 then went as a CIT, but here on the West Coast I never heard of a camp longer than 1 week. I imagine 4 or 6 week-long camps are used by parents to keep their teens out of trouble and/or out of the parents' way during the summer.
