What do you suppose is the chance...

...that the rights to the Beatles' 'With a Little Help From my Friends" will ever be cleared, and The Lathe of Heaven restored to its original state?

Tho' it's one of my favorite films, I hardly ever watch it now, 'cause I can't get past that horrible replacement. It really ruins it for me.

I think the replacement hurts it a little bit. I doubt it that they will ever change it back because of the cost. The did the same thing when they put WKRP In Cincinnatti on dvd but it was much worse as the show is set at a radio station and various lines, jokes and scenes are very dependent upon the original music. What they changed because of royalties ruined the impact of the original productions.

I hadn't heard about the changes to WKRP... they replaced the theme song?

(I'm sure you know this, but your siggy is uttered at one time or another by most of the major characters, not just Locke. )

They didn't change the theme song, thank God. But like the episode where Les gets a date with Jennifer and he does this whole thing of putting on a ridiculous wig while "Hot Blooded" is playing, they changed it to some other rock muzak and it's just not even funny anymore. There are also other songs changed which I can't remember specifically but still you can see that it's "off". That show had character and changing the songs really takes the zing out of the zingers.

Yeah, I know most of the characters say it here and there but, to me, I most associate it with Locke as he seems to say it more often and it fits his situation so strongly. I changed my sig last night anyway. Of course, it's becoming an overused quote already but I like it.

None. It would not be economically reasonable to attempt to recover the rights. not enough buyer base.

Ironically demonstrating Haber's utilitarian approach to life, as opposed to the more poetic & organic worldview that George represents.

In fact, the replacement of the Beatles song with a bad cover version is a perfect example of what happens to the world when someone like Haber meddles with it & tries to "fix" it. To him, it would still be the same song -- same music, same lyrics -- so what's the real difference? He sees only the surface of things, never the essence -- again, ironic considering his profession as a psychiatrist, supposedly trained in getting to the heart & soul of humanity.

I think replacing it with the muzak cover version adds to the subtext of alternate or fake/false realities.

Oh, I draw the exact opposite conclusion, since the song becomes the pathway to recovering the real, original Heather LeLache, who'd been lost altogether when the world lost all ethnicity and became gray. (Personally, I've always thought that Haber, during his sessions with George, had deliberately erased her, since she was the only other person who knew about George's abilities, and he resented her interference.) Then, too, there's the Beatles memorabilia in the 'Junque' shop, which just rubs it in.
I don't want to see it changed back,

Did you ever have the opportunity to see it in its original form? Here's a rare opportunity - don't know how long it will last:

what is more important is locating a better copy of The Lathe of Heaven - if it still exists - on film.

That's a bit more problematic than putting the music back, since supposedly the original masters have been lost.
