I don't think ROger Corman really remembers most of the details of his movies. The uncut version just includes a head ripping scene that in my opinion was no more gory than the stuff that was left in the movie.
shareThe element they were working from for the Region 1 DVD was an MPAA R rated home video version, which had the cut enforced in 1980 to get the R certificate. The uncut version is on a Japanese DVD which also has a 1:85:1 widescreen version that is not rated by the MPAA.
Most of Corman's New Line era scifi/horror films had to be cut to get R certificates, the most notorious example being GALAXY OF TERROR with it's Space Maggot scene, which was shortened by as much as 45 seconds to a minute, depending upon which 3rd hand report you encounter.
All of Corman's catalog from that era is currently owned by Disney who have not shown any interest in re-releasing any of it, let alone restoring the original elements for DVD releases showing uncut versions, which may actually be hard to track down. For instance, Allan Holzman's MUTANT was cut by Corman before rating by about seven minutes and the only known example of Allan's original assembly is in a film collection at UCLA. That version never even made it to a certification stage, and the print that is going around on video and Region 2 DVD is the theatrical cut, not the director's cut. So even if Disney were to authorize a release for DVD they would probably just use the home video element they already have -- which is exactly what happened with HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP.

The answer to your question is because they wanted to release the R-rated theatrical version (in full frame) on DVD. The European DVD is the uncut version, and it's in widescreen! It was released on DVD in Europe by UA/MGM. Of course you'd need a region free DVD player to view it. The picture quality is excellent. I would imagine "Humanoids From The Deep" is now being handled by Buena Vista, which is part of Walt Disney. Buena Vista is now handling most of Roger Corman's New World Pictures' titles. Why not try Buena Vista/Walt Disney Pictures, and see if a proper DVD release will be coming soon?
