I was five or so and saw it at the drive-in. In my mind, it was pretty popular for a while.

I actually don't remember it being in the theaters but it could have been. I can tell you it was on HBO pretty soon afterwards and it rapidly gained a cult following from it's cable exposure especially among teenage boys at that time, I was 14.

"The piranhas..."
"What about the goddamn piranhas?"
"They're eating the guests, sir."

It was a big hit in New York City. I remember seeing it with The Fog and The Children at one of the huge theaters in Times Square. Really awesome grindhouse experience.

Next great one was a few years later, same theater. They played Pieces, The Incubus and A Nightmare on Elm Street.

"Humanoids From The Deep" as I remember barely made a splash on the theaters. It gained its cult classic following in the VHS tape release. My memory is faded but I seem to remember the movie briefly on the theaters but little mention of it otherwise. In 1980 horror movies were coming out fast and furious on the theaters and so it was easy for Humanoids to be lost in the rush.

This film seemed to come and go pretty quickly near me, and it appeared on HBO less than a year later -- a quick turnaround back then and a sign that it wasn't a big hit.

I saw the film on a double bill with people Who Own the Dark. Theater was crowded for a middle of the week showing. Audience was more receptive to People Who Own the Dark. Too busy laughing and gasping at Humanoids.

I saw Humanoids at the drive-in with Galaxy of Terror. I think it was in 1981. Galaxy was the first movie shown.
