#12 on Time Out London's The 50 Greatest Westerns

http://www.timeout.com/london/feature/1019/the-50-greatest-westerns-r- the-full-list

Don't agree with a lot of the list, but it's always nice to see this film get some of the respect it's always deserved.

Agreed, at least it's showing up in some lists (not that I care much about them), any bit of public exposure is good to have more people see this movie for what it is, not for what the philistine critics and executives made it to be.

However, I still am in disbelief as to how nobody takes the time to restore the prints and release a Blu-ray or another dvd of the 319 min version... that would make this movie justice! I'm stuck with the horrible dvd available at the moment that looks like it's been illicitely recorded in the cinema. And when I think of all the crap out there that's being released daily when gems like this remain unknown it's making me wanna shout louder. But we can only hope...

A Blu-Ray is coming

I really do think this is a strong candidate for Criterion, and I'm usually one who gets annoyed at the over-insistence by people for so many films to get the Criterion treatment that aren't applicable. It's the kind of film that ought to be up their alley (a highly controversial and critically and commercially maligned film that has slowly over the years gained appreciation as a great work of cinema), and with their partnership with MGM and having released a ton of their films in recent years, it's something that could be made happen!

This is ahead of Unforgiven on that list?

Hard... to... believe... must... not... have... heart... at.... ahhhh

Nope. It's just that good.

im not a western fan and i probably havent seen 50 of them, but i doubt this movie would even make my 50 list if i had one.

it was great to see dead man on there. and mcabe and mrs miller was num 1! i love altman. but seeing heavens gate ranked at 12 really gives me hope that criterion is going to get this bluray out asap and that the film is gaining the respect it deserves.

Heaven's Gate listed higher than Once Upon A Time In The West?
The list has less value than the stuff on the toilet paper I flush.
I know, right? That struck me surprised, as well.
What the hell do Brits know about Westerns anyway.
LOL I was gonna say that as a joke till I saw your post.

I'm surprised "The Shooting" is on the list, because that movie is virtually unknown in the U.S. I tend to think of it more as an existential movie, done in a western setting, rather than just a western. I don't agree 100% with the list either, but it's got some pretty good titles in it that deserve to be there. I absolutely do not agree with #1, though.

Heaven's Gate, the film Hollywood was wrong about.

Quite a good list. Though I'd put "Heaven's Gate" higher myself, there's not much to complain. But the list should rather be re-titled 50 best US-Westerns and exclude the Leones and similar stuff. Not that they don't belong an a general western list, but they are definitely too sparse in this one.
And El Topo isn't really a western (if so, you can count Star Wars in also ;-)).
But all in all a fine list for anyone looking to explore this genre.

that is great recognition. I'm very happy to know it has received another lease on life. Michael Cimino, wherever he is, should be proud.
