Final scene (spoiler) + script

Looking at the latest version it was interesting that Cimino increased the emphasis on the photo of Averill beside the woman from the graduation ceremony- presumably his wife- in his room in Bridges's saloon. However, looking at her re-appearance in the final scene on the boat I wondered if she is supposed to be physically paralysed. I'd taken her inertia and her request that Averill give her a cigarette and her passive acceptance of the cigarette as a deliberate contrast with Ella's activeness, but it is notable how very immobile the woman is. It makes very little difference to the film except as another instance of unrevealed back-story, but it's a strange occurrence.

In connexion with this, has any script of the film been published? Has anyone analysed plot variations and alterations as the film was planned and made?

I've actually wondered about her phys condition myself! I have my doubts about her being paralyzed from the waist down -- she may have just been taking an afternoon rest, I think it was a common ritual around the turn of the 20th Century & before.

I too had the impression she suffered from a chronic illness, and that perhaps boating relieved her symptoms, etc. Or perhaps as you've noted her idleness just symbolizes the wealth and class pretentions that Averill may have lived without if Ella had lived
