So Luke out ranks Han Solo

Luke is a commander and Solo is a captain yet Solo shows him no respect

reply

When does he show him no respect? I haven't watched it in years but today I watched the first one (as I call it) and at first Han was short with him but even at the end of that movie he gained a lot of respect for him.

reply

cuz you never call a superior officer "kid"

what are you from quebec?

reply

No? And you served in the Republic? You know the rules? And I don't think he's being disrespectful when he calls him kid. Not to mention I don't think Han really cares. He would see Luke as an equal I would think. (As far as being a soldier) I'm sure they bugged Han to join them in the first place.

reply

The new republic was after the rebel alliance.

Whats the point of having a structured military if your junior officers dont care or show respect to their superiors.

I did not serve in the republic. I am not from a galaxy far far away.

reply

The rebels really aren't a strict military. They don't salute each other, or refer to each other by ranks. If we were to look at it like that calling each other Luke and Han is disrespectful. But of course these characters have preexisting relationships.

reply

Also considering that these were the two heroes who destroyed the Death Star, I don't anyone would bother filing a report about something so trivial. Besides if Luke, the "offended" officer, wasn't bothered by it, then I don't think anyone else would be.

And less we forget Leia is considered among the highest of leaders in the Rebellion, despite holding no formal military rank, and being a princess from a planet that no longer exist, and its representative in a Senate that was disbanded.

Point being, in The Rebellion, your accomplishments and reputation matter more than your rank.

reply

Luke and Leia officially function within the Rebellion's military structure, yet because of their backgrounds and abilities they are in some ways above it and can function independently of it. Han also functions independently of the Rebellion's official structure, because he doesn't give a rat's ass.

And of course when Luke became a Jedi he could ignore the command structure in the same way that Darth Vader ignored the Empire's. When all ranks are afraid of you, the command structure doesn't matter.

I really wish the people who comment here had profile pictures.

First, I don't know that Han was an official member of the Alliance until ROTJ and becoming "General Solo". He may have just been called "Captain Solo" as the owner/operator of the Millennium Falcon.

Second, in the navy Captain is a higher rank than Commander. They did mimic the naval ranks to some degree (Admiral Ackbar).

reply

He knew him before....when he was just a bright eyed kid. I don't see it as he gives him no respect. They are friends...piers, not a commander officer over a subordinate situation.

Give some examples of when Han shows him no respect?
